What  is "GREEN"?

What is all this talk about green products? What makes a product "green"?

"Green" is a term used to tell us that a product has properties which promote environmental (or personal) health or resource conservation in some way.  Products can be green for one or a variety of qualities that they possess. These qualities include; reduced toxicity, reusability, energy efficiency, responsible packaging, recycled content, intelligent design, responsible manufacturing techniques, reduction of personal environmental hazards and the list goes on.

Another aspect to look at is the impact that a product makes on the world. This is called a footprint.  It's measured by the problems or issues that a product invokes from its use; from its ingredients and initial production, to its packaging and usage, and its eventual disposal or reuse.

A product can be green in one area, say because of its natural ingredients but not be green because of how its manufactured.  Its hard to find products that meet all the green criteria. That's why it important to read labels and ask questions, gaining as much information you can, to help you make informed purchases.  And with each purchase you will most likely have to make some type of compromise. Thats ok.  Just use your best judgment and feel good that you have done something positive for our planet!

Sounds complicated?  It can be at first but as you continue to educate yourself about green products, you will become a more knowledgeable and  experienced green consumer! Remember we are here to help, so email us if you should have a question.
