Using natural paints, finishes and wall coverings will allow you to create the look you want without the usual toxic ingredients.  Look for finishes that are plant-based formulas and low-VOC, low-toxic synthetics. The plant-based finishes are rich in natural oils.  They also contain mineral pigments and other ingredients. The synthetics, all waterborne, utilize the best of modern chemistry to produce durable finishes with minimum toxicity and odor. They're as easy to apply as ordinary latex paints because they are just that, minus the hazardous ingredients.
